Whatnot seller fees in 2026
A US seller pays Whatnot two fees on every order: a commission on the item’s sale price and a payment processing fee on the whole order. Since September 21, 2026 the commission also depends on your category and on how much you sold in the previous four weeks.
| Fee | Rate | Charged on |
|---|---|---|
| Commission | 8% (4% for coins) on the Standard tier, lower from Tier 1 | The item’s sale price after your coupons; not shipping or sales tax |
| High-value orders | 0% commission on the part of an order above $1,500.00, for a limited time | Comics & Anime, Toys & Hobbies, Coins & Money, Trading Card Games, Entertainment Cards, sports singles, Bags & Accessories and Jewelry & Watches; not sports breaks or Surprise Products |
| Payment processing | 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction | Everything the buyer pays: item, shipping and sales tax |
| Shipping | Paid by the buyer unless you offer free or capped shipping | Buys your prepaid label; never part of your earnings |
| Tips | No commission | You receive 100% of the tip |
Commission rates by tier
Your tier is set by your total Whatnot sales over the previous 4 weeks (28 days), across every category, and it fixes your rates for the next 4 weeks. Live sales use the show’s category and marketplace sales use the product’s.
| Tier (4-week sales) | Sports | Trading card games | Fashion | Other collectibles | Coins | Everything else |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard under $15,000 in 4 weeks | 8% | 8% | 8% | 8% | 4% | 8% |
| Tier 1 $15,000–$34,999 | 7.75% | 7.75% | 7% | 7.25% | 3.9% | 7% |
| Tier 2 $35,000–$49,999 | 7.5% | 7.5% | 6.5% | 6.5% | 3.8% | 6.5% |
| Tier 3 $50,000–$99,999 | 7.25% | 7.25% | 5.5% | 6% | 3.7% | 5.5% |
| Tier 4 $100,000–$249,999 | 7% | 7% | 5% | 5% | 3.6% | 4% |
| Tier 5 $250,000–$499,999 | 6.75% | 6.75% | 4.5% | 5% | 3.55% | 4% |
| Tier 6 $500,000 or more | 6.5% | 6.5% | 4.5% | 5% | 3.5% | 4% |
Worked example: a $50.00 card
You sell a basketball single for $50.00 in a live show. The buyer pays $4.85 shipping, Whatnot’s USPS Ground Advantage price for a 4–8 oz package, plus 6% sales tax. You are on the Standard tier and paid $15.00 for the card. These are the numbers the calculator above starts with:
| Sold price | $50.00 |
|---|---|
| Shipping charged to buyer | +$4.85 |
| Commission (8% of $50.00) | −$4.00 |
| Payment processing (2.9% + $0.30 on the $58.14 order total, incl. $3.29 sales tax) | −$1.99 |
| Shipping label (paid with the buyer's $4.85 shipping) | −$4.85 |
| Payout from Whatnot | $44.01 |
| Your shipping cost | $0.00 |
| Item cost | −$15.00 |
| Profit | $29.01 |
Whatnot keeps $4.00 in commission and $1.99 in processing, $5.99 in all, or 12.0% of the item price. The buyer’s $4.85 shipping pays for the label, so Whatnot pays you $44.01. After the $15.00 the card cost you, your profit is $29.01: a 52.9% margin on the $54.85 the buyer paid before tax.
What Whatnot’s fees are charged on
- The item price. Commission is a percentage of the final sale price after any coupon you offered, and nothing else.
- Shipping. The buyer pays it by default and it buys your prepaid label, so it is never part of your earnings, but the processing fee is charged on it. Free or capped shipping comes out of your earnings: with a $7.75 cap on a $20.00 shipment, you pay the other $12.25.
- Sales tax. The buyer pays it to Whatnot and you never receive it, but the processing fee is charged on it too. That is why the calculator asks for the buyer’s tax rate.
- Tax on the fees themselves. In some states Whatnot adds tax to its own fees and deducts it from your earnings, based on where you are: on commission in DC, Hawaii, New Mexico and West Virginia; on processing in Connecticut, Hawaii, New Mexico, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas and West Virginia. Resale exemptions don’t apply.
- Tips. No commission; you receive the whole tip.
How to pay less in Whatnot fees
- Grow into a tier. Rates drop once you pass $15,000 in 4 weeks. In Fashion, Tier 1 cuts commission from 8% to 7%: $0.40 on every $40.00 sale. Seller Hub shows your sales so far and your projected rate.
- Watch the fixed $0.30 on cheap items. On a $3.00 sale it is 10.0% of the price before any commission. Selling small items as lots, or starting bids higher, spreads it over more money.
- Check the $1,500.00 rule on big sales. A $2,000.00 sports single pays $120.00 in commission; the same $2,000.00 in a sports break pays $160.00. The calculator applies the rule to sports singles, trading card games and coins automatically; for comics & anime, toys & hobbies, entertainment cards, bags & accessories or jewelry & watches, set it to Yes.
- Offer free shipping on purpose. It feels like a small perk in a busy show, but every label you cover comes straight out of your profit. Put it in the calculator as your shipping cost to see the real margin.
- Avoid cancelling orders. Cancelling for a reason within your control can cost $3 or 3% of the order total, whichever is higher; only your first seller cancellation fee is waived.
- List in the right category. Deliberately listing in the wrong category for a lower rate counts as fee avoidance and can lead to enforcement.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Whatnot take from a sale?
On the Standard tier Whatnot takes 8% of the item price (4% for coins) plus 2.9% + $0.30 of the order total. For a $50.00 sale with $4.85 shipping and 6% sales tax that is $5.99, or 12.0% of the item price.
Does Whatnot charge fees on shipping and sales tax?
Commission, no: it is charged on the item’s sale price only. The 2.9% + $0.30 processing fee, yes: it is charged on everything the buyer pays, including shipping and sales tax. The buyer’s shipping pays for your prepaid label, so it never reaches your payout.
How do Whatnot’s commission tiers work?
Since September 21, 2026, your total Whatnot sales in the previous 4 weeks set your commission rate for the next 4 weeks. Below $15,000 you are on the Standard tier; above it, rates fall by category, down to 3.5% on the public rate card. Rates as low as 3% are custom terms for the highest-volume sellers.
Does Whatnot take a cut of tips?
No. Whatnot doesn’t charge sellers commission on tips, and you receive 100% of the tip.
Is there a fee for cancelling a Whatnot order?
There can be. If an order is cancelled for a reason within your control, Whatnot may charge $3 or 3% of the order total, whichever is higher, and your first seller cancellation fee is waived. Fees may not apply to buyer-requested cancellations made through Whatnot, shipping carrier issues, problems unrelated to your actions or breaks that don’t fill, and Whatnot tells you before you confirm a cancellation.
Why is my Whatnot payout different from the calculator?
Lower usually means something the calculator leaves out: tax some states charge on Whatnot’s fees, shipping you cover with free or capped shipping (enter it as your shipping cost), or fees for promoting a show. Higher usually means a lower commission rate than the rate card: a promotional rate such as new-seller 0% fees, a custom rate, or the Premier Shop discount, which takes 10% off your tier rate through October 31, 2026 (from November 1, Premier Shop no longer includes a commission discount).
How current are these Whatnot fees?
They were checked against Whatnot’s help center on the date shown in the sources box below, and the change log lists the main fee changes since January 2026. The calculator, the tables and this page all read the same fee model, so they always agree.
